Spacebar Speed Test guide

Why measure spacebar speed?

Plenty of games bind jump or dash to the spacebar, so how fast you can repeat that input translates directly into control. Unlike mouse clicking, many people hit the bar with a thumb or the side of the palm, which is why spacebar results tend to look different from CPS results.

What's average, and what's a good score?

On this site's scale, 3–4.5 presses per second is average (C), 4.5–6 is above average, and over 7.5 is very fast. These are our own grade bands, not official statistics.

People who press with the thumb and people who tap with the side of the hand score differently, so it's best not to compare directly with CPS click speed.

How is this measured?

This test ignores the auto-repeat that fires when you hold the key down, so only genuine press-and-release actions count. Your keyboard's switch type (membrane vs. mechanical) and key travel distance can also change your result.

Can you improve?

To a degree. Don't bottom out the key — tap only to the point where the switch actuates; the shorter travel means more presses. If one hand isn't enough, alternating both index fingers is another approach.

On mechanical keyboards, shallow-actuation switches help; membrane keyboards rebound slowly and hit a ceiling sooner. Stop right away if your wrist hurts — rapid pressing is about rhythm, not force.
