What is a reaction time test?

A reaction time test measures, in milliseconds (ms), how quickly you click after visually noticing a color change on screen. The lower the number, the faster your reaction speed. It's a common indicator of split-second responsiveness used in gaming and sports.

What's the average reaction time in ms?

The median is about 273ms. That's the figure observed across large online reaction-time datasets, and 250–300ms is the typical average range.

Low 200s is faster than average, and 150–200ms is a well-trained level. Results can shift by 10–50ms depending on your device, monitor refresh rate, and touchscreen latency.

How to measure accurately

  • Cold hands or drowsiness will slow you down.

Can you improve reaction time?

To a degree. Reaction time is largely innate, but repeating the same task usually makes you a little faster as you get used to it. That said, this is mostly familiarity with this test rather than a broad gain in reflexes.

Lack of sleep, fatigue, and too much caffeine all slow reactions, so looking after your condition is the most reliable lever. Reaction time also tends to slow with age, so the same person will see different results over time.
