APM Test guide

What is APM (Actions Per Minute)?

The number of actions you perform in one minute. The metric comes from RTS games like StarCraft and is now a standard measure of gaming mechanics. This test measures it by clicking the green tile on a grid (3×3, 4×4, 5×5) or pressing the green key among Q W E A S D.

Accuracy counts as well as speed: final APM = raw APM × accuracy.

What is a good APM?

Smaller grids mean shorter mouse travel and higher APM, so the rank thresholds differ per mode. On 3×3, 111–160 is Skilled and 200+ is Master; on keyboard, 81–120 is Skilled and 160+ is Master.

Pro players are known to reach 300–400 APM in real games, but that number includes meaningful commands, so it is not directly comparable to this test.

How to measure accurately

  • Build a base with 60 seconds on the 3×3 grid before moving to bigger grids or keyboard mode.
  • Missed clicks lower accuracy and cut your final APM. Get accuracy first; speed follows.
  • Short tests like 15 seconds only reflect burst speed. Use 60 seconds or more to check endurance.
  • Max APM is the fastest 5-second window. A big gap from the average means your rhythm broke.

How to raise your APM

Practice often in short, focused sessions and keep a proper posture and grip. Rushing and missing costs points, so lock in accuracy first and then add speed. Rotate through the modes to find what suits you, and use a comfortable key layout in keyboard mode. On long tests a steady rhythm raises your average more than chasing a peak. Keep in mind that a high APM alone does not make you a better player; meaningful actions have to grow with it.
